Ptosis / Pendulous Gallery

"Aren't saggy boobs a sign of getting old? But I'm sagging and I'm still a young woman. What gives?"

Breast Ptosis is a technical way to describe breasts that are pendulous, or they may be more often referred to as "sagging" breasts. When women are young with breasts just starting to bud, their nipples are "pert" and high up on their chest. This becomes ingrained as a type of bookmark that refers to younger age. As their breasts mature and gain in size and complexity, they tend to become heavier and so they will generally "head South". Their nipples will tend to move downward. The natural human breast basically attaches between the clavicle bone and the sixth rib when a woman is in her twenties, but the lower attachment point actually will move downward toward the next lower rib as she reaches her later years. Many women feel a bit of despair about the fact that when their breasts are no longer high on their chest it indicates that they are becoming... well, older.

It is a common, popular assumption that when breasts point outward from the chest the woman is young and when they hang downward toward her feet she is old, but that is not always the fact. In some cases, breasts will be very pendulous when the woman is still in her early twenties, and some may be very firm and uplifted when she is in her golden years. Heredity controls whether they will become pendulous in most cases. Other causes for breasts to be less protruding can be the type of diet upon which the woman lives, and whether she smokes. In some cases breasts in some societies are literally tied downward, forcing them to develop that way, because they are "more beautiful" in that society when they are pointing downward.

Back around 1917 a woman wanted to have less breast movement when she was dancing so she asked her seamstress to fashion some type of garment from some scarves that would prevent her breasts from swaying. That idea became popular and she placed a patent upon the idea, which she sold to the first manufacturer of the "Brassiere". Now, the hundreds of manufacturers of bras, girdles, bustieres, bandeaus, or what-have-you count on women having a dislike for their breasts "giving away their age", and they purchase bras that are often poorly fitted and almost always uncomfortable to control their breasts from moving and giving away their presence, and to prevent them from "stretching out" and sagging with time.

It has been shown many times that by NOT wearing a supportive garment like a bra, the natural Cooper's Ligaments inside the breasts will provide the needed support and keep the breasts at a higher position than they will attain if a bra is frequently worn. Basically, if a bra supports the weight of the breast, the ligaments are not needed and they atrophy, just as the non-use of a leg due to a cast on that leg will allow the muscles to not be used and they too will atrophy. Without a bra, your breasts will move more freely, and it has been shown that there is a connection between the need for your breasts to move more freely (in order to circulate the lymphatic fluids and eliminate static toxins in your breasts).  I go into much greater detail on the health implications of the bra in an article I wrote in the Awareness Section titled "The 'Purpose' of the Bra".

Like the other Galleries on this section, the intent of publishing these images is to encourage those ladies that feel they are alone in having breasts of which they are not proud to realize that you are among many sisters that share your distinction. You are not unique... you are special.

Because current 'fashion' does not glorify naturally beautiful breasts that are positioned on the chest at a lower level, women that have pendulous breasts tend to feel inferior to other women with higher-lifted or "younger" breasts, so they may keep them hidden, even from themselves, or resort to surgery to "lift" their breasts. In reality, there are many people... men and women alike... that actually adore breasts such as these, and it is their hope that these breasts be celebrated by those that possess them, and that they wear them proudly. They are deeply admired.
